A video from the Rockowitz Writing Center’s peer tutors on how they support student writers
Final paper due? Don’t know how to start? Wondering if your thesis/logic/argument is clear?
Come to Hunter’s Rockowitz Writing Center! Hear from peer tutors Angelica, Austin, and Avalon on how they support student writers.
Video by: HCAP, ACERT, and the Rockowitz Writing Center
The mission of the Rockowitz Writing Center is to support students’ writing and reading processes in order to help them develop as academic writers and take ownership of their education.
The Center employs peer tutors—Hunter undergraduate and graduate students who are successful academic writers. The tutors use their experience and expertise to support their peers’ writing process and development. One of the core principles of the tutorial process is the use of the Socratic Method through which tutors pose questions to help writers reflect on their thinking and how they can best express their ideas. Since there are often several issues in one paper, tutors are unable to focus on every error/confusion in the text. Instead they prioritize the most important or prevalent reading, critical thinking, or writing issue, improving the quality of the writing while helping students learn to recognize and address the issue themselves going forward.
The Rockowitz Writing Center is located on the 7th floor of the library, in the Silverstein Student Success Center.
Hours of operation during the Fall and Spring semesters:
Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Friday and Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Students can schedule regularly scheduled weekly appointments with one tutor as well as seeking drop-in assistance. The Center also offers e-tutoring. More information about how to book an e-tutor session can be found here: http://www.hunter.cuny.edu/rwc/students/chat-tutoring-session-info
For more information, contact the Center by phone at (212) 772-4212 or by email at rwc@hunter.cuny.edu.
