Apply by 12/29: Stories of NYC: Asian American & Asian Diasporic Memoir Writing

December 29, 2021

Have you always wanted to write about your life but didn’t know where to begin? Would you benefit from a creative writing class that would help improve your overall reading, speaking, writing, and listening skills in university courses? Join writer Bushra Rehman for a series of creative writing workshops in which we will explore our relationship to this vibrant, resilient metropolis we may call home. Together, we will generate new writing, practice techniques for revision, overcome writing blocks and celebrate our creativity.

Each workshop will include a series of short readings and generative writing prompts as well as time to share our writing.

Writing Workshops (must attend all to participate): Tuesdays and Thursdays (1/11, 1/13, 1/18, 1/20) @ 11am to 1pm

Revision meetings with instructor: Tuesday and Thursdays (1/25, 1/27) @ 11am to 1pm. Sessions are OPTIONAL, but students are strongly encouraged to attend.

Celebratory Reading Event: Friday, 2/4 @ 7pm to 8:30pm

Apply at bit.ly/winterwriting22 by Wednesday, 12/29
This free, non-credit, workshop series is open to all current Hunter College and BMCC undergraduate students. Students who identify as Asian American, Asian Diasporic, BIPOC, and/or from immigrant families are encouraged to apply. This class is capped at 20. Applicants will receive an email confirmation of their spot in the workshop by January 5th. We will also keep a waitlist and notify students if there are any openings.

About the instructor: Bushra Rehman is a writer and teaching artist. Her books include the autobiographical novel Corona, a dark comedy about being South Asian American, the poetry collection Marianna’s Beauty Salon, and the ground-breaking anthology Colonize This! Young Women of Color on Today’s Feminism. She is creator of the community-based writing workshop Two Truths and a Lie: Writing Memoir and Autobiographical Fiction.
