It was amazing to see the South Asian community come together for the screening and panel discussion of @bengaliharlemfilm hosted by @aaaricuny at @bmcc_cuny. Thank you to everyone who played a role in organizing the screening and discussion, that represents the complex and multigenerational experience of South Asians in the U.S. A heartfelt story that uncovered how Bengali immigrants established themselves in Harlem and formed a vibrant community that blended South Asian, African-American, and Puerto Rican cultures. Despite facing discrimination and marginalization, they carved out a space for themselves and contributed to the social and political fabric of their adopted home.
Thank you to @aladdin.ullah and @vivekbald1857 for depicting the story of Bengali Harlem, and unraveling the resilience and determination of a community that history forgot, a reminder of the importance of uncovering and preserving marginalized histories. Thank you to our panelists of Bangladeshi artists, organizers, and community members, including Nahar Alam, Nadia Q. Ahmad, NYC Councilmember Shahana Hanif, DRUM (Desis Rising Up and Moving), and S. Nadia Hussain (moderator), who showed us how they continue to show up for the South Asian community and how we can too in many different creative ways.
A powerful and moving screening and discussion that left no dry eyes in the house!
If you were not able to attend the film screening and panel, watch the video online at https://aaari.info/23-04-27bengaliharlem/
