BMCC-Hunter AANAPISI Bridge Initiative Goals and Outcomes

The BMCC-Hunter AANAPISI Bridge Initiative (ABI) supports the diverse needs of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) and other high-need students at BMCC and Hunter, with a focus on those who are immigrant students, first-generation college students, and English Language Learners (ELL) through student programs and faculty development.

The long-term goals of the AANAPISI Bridge Initiative are to:

  • Foster a greater sense of identity, purpose, and belonging for the BMCC and Hunter AAPI student communities
  • Increase BMCC and Hunter’s institutional capacity to serve AAPI students
  • Collaborate with the existing network of support services at BMCC and Hunter to connect AAPI students to resources at each institution
  • Increase the retention, graduation, and overall student success of AAPI and other high-need students at BMCC and Hunter
  • Bridge relationships between BMCC and Hunter communities to allow students, faculty and staff to exchange information, build community, and connect to resources
  • Document and support the needs and experiences of BMCC’s AAPI students to inform efforts to map, connect, strengthen and expand existing resources for this diverse population

As a result of our programs, we anticipate the following outcomes:

  • Increased student knowledge and use of campus resources 
  • Increased student financial literacy 
  • Increased student academic writing, research, and communication skills 
  • Increased student motivation to approach faculty, staff and community mentors for support
  • Increased student engagement in research projects
  • Increased staff and faculty cultural competency and capacity to serve AAPI students

ABI is a partnership between Borough of Manhattan Community College, CUNY (BMCC) and Hunter College, CUNY (Hunter) that provides student programs and faculty development to ABI is funded through a five-year collaborative grant (2020-2025) from the U.S. Department of Education’s Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution (AANAPISI) program.
