SUMMARY:Lunch and Learn Book Talk: Our Laundry Our Town
DESCRIPTION:Join BMCC professor\, playwright\, performer\, acoustic punk rock raconteur Alvin Eng in a book talk of Our Laundry\, Our Town. Professor Eng (Speech\, Communications and Theatre Arts) will be joined in conversation by Professor Alexander Ho (Ethnic & Race Studies). \nWith humor and grace\, the memoir of a first-generation Chinese American in New York City\nOur Laundry\, Our Town is a memoir that decodes and processes the fractured urban oracle bones of Alvin Eng’s upbringing in Flushing\, Queens\, in the 1970s. Back then\, his family was one of the few immigrant Chinese families in a far-flung neighborhood in New York City. His parents had an arranged marriage and ran a Chinese hand laundry. From behind the counter of his parents’ laundry and within the confines of a household that was rooted in a different century and culture\, he sought to reconcile this insular home life with the turbulent yet inspiring street life that was all around them––from the faux martial arts of TV’s Kung Fu to the burgeoning underworld of the punk rock scene. \nIf you have any questions\, contact Alvin Eng aeng@bmcc.cuny.edu. \nDate: April 20 @12:30 PM – 1:30 PM\nLocation:  Hudson Room (S-249 ) 199 Chambers St

SUMMARY:In Search of Bengali Harlem Documentary Film Screening and Conversations with Director and Panel
DESCRIPTION:As a teenager in 1980s Harlem\, Alaudin Ullah was swept up in the revolutionary energy of early hip-hop. He rejected his working-class Bangladeshi parents and turned his back on everything South Asian and Muslim. \nNow\, as an actor and playwright contending with the Islamophobia of post-9/11 Hollywood\, Alaudin wants to tell his parents’ stories. But he has no idea who they really were\, no idea of the lives they led or the struggles they faced as Muslim immigrants of an earlier era. \nIn Search of Bengali Harlem follows Ullah from the streets of New York City to the villages of Bangladesh to uncover the pasts of his father\, Habib\, and mother\, Mohima. Alaudin first discovers that Habib was part of an extraordinary history of mid-20th century Harlem\, in which Bengali Muslim men\, dodging racist Asian Exclusion laws\, married into New York’s African American and Puerto Rican communities – and in which the likes of Malcolm X and Miles Davis shared space and broke bread with immigrants from the subcontinent. \nThen\, after crossing the globe to visit the former homes of his parents\, Alaudin unearths unsettling truths about his mother: about the hardships and trauma that she overcame to become one of the first women to migrate to the U.S. from rural Bangladesh. In Search of Bengali Harlem is a transformative journey\, not just for Alaudin Ullah\, but for our understanding of the complex histories of South Asian and Muslim Americans. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; film starts at 7 p.m. \nDirected by Vivek Bald and Alaudin Ullah\nProduced by Susannah Ludwig\nEdited by Beyza Boyacioglu \nRSVP for free tickets. \nDate:\nApril 27\nTime:\n7:00 PM – 8:30 PM\nLocation: 199 Chambers Street\, Theatre 1
