SUMMARY:Apply by 5/5: HCAP's Asian American Communities Research Program
DESCRIPTION:Program Description\nDo you know of a faculty member whose research is just fascinating to you? Are you curious what research actually entails? If you answered yes to those questions\, then apply to be an undergraduate research assistant (URA) for the Hunter College AANAPISI Project (HCAP) Asian American Communities Research Program! URAs will conduct research with Asian American communities during summer ‘22 (June to August). The project must be supervised by a faculty mentor. Both the mentor and the URA will receive a $500 stipend. We encourage students from all backgrounds and academic majors to apply by submitting an online application by 5pm\, May 5th. \nStudent Commitments and Compensation\nParticipants must be enrolled as a Hunter undergraduate during the summer 2022 semester. Students will receive a $500 stipend and are required to: \n\nHave completed at least one writing class and one Asian American Studies class prior to starting the program.\nComplete the Hunter CITI IRB Training if they will conduct research with human subjects. Take the “CITI HSR-Social and Behavioral Course” for undergraduates by June 7.\nAttend a 1-hour orientation. \nHave at least 1 check-in meeting per month with their faculty mentor.\nAttend 1 mid-way check-in meeting with HCAP staff.\nWork 2-3 hours per week on research activities during the summer session (June\, July\, August).\nProduce a final piece due mid-September. Format can range from scholarly research to creative works (e.g.\, policy briefs\, PSA campaign\, conference poster\, research proposal\, contribution to a journal article) or a reflection blog post (written or video) for HCAP’s website that distills learnings from the research experience.\nPresent their work – options include speaking at a HCAP Asian American Studies Symposium event or presenting at an HCAP-enhanced Asian American Studies class.\n\nProject Criteria\nURAs must focus their projects on Asian American community research topics. DESCRIPTION:COURSE DESCRIPTION \nOnline interviewing is an increasingly common practice for jobs\, internships\, and admissions to graduate/professional programs. In this online series\, students will explore stereotypes about Asian Americans in the workplace\, learn and practice strategies for online interviewing\, and receive feedback from mock interviews. During the workshops\, students will have opportunities to hear from Asian American professionals on how they found fulfilling careers while navigating their identities in the workplace. \nCOURSE FORMAT \nThere are 5 online workshops and 2 mock interviews that are scheduled individually pre- and post-workshops.You must actively and fully participate in ALL workshops and mock interviews. DESCRIPTION:Have you always wanted to write about your life but didn’t know where to begin? Would you benefit from a creative writing class that would help improve your overall reading\, speaking\, writing\, and listening skills in university courses? Join writer Bushra Rehman for a series of creative writing workshops in which we will explore our relationship to this vibrant\, resilient metropolis we may call home. Together\, we will generate new writing\, practice techniques for revision\, overcome writing blocks and celebrate our creativity. \nEach workshop will include a series of short readings and generative writing prompts as well as time to share our writing. \nCOURSE FORMAT\nWriting Workshops (must attend all to participate): Tuesdays and Thursdays (June 7\, June 9\, June 14\, June 16\, June 21 and June 23)\, from 11am to 1pm. \nRevision meetings with instructor: Tuesdays and Thursdays (June 28 and June 30)\, from 11am to 1pm. DESCRIPTION:The HCAP Transfer Pipeline Program provides peer mentorship and support to transfer students during their first semester at Hunter College. While open to all\, this program targets Asian American and other first-generation college students who are transferring into Hunter from other CUNY community colleges. To learn more about Hunter College AANAPISI Project (HCAP)\, visit: www.huntercap.org \nThrough the HCAP Transfer Pipeline Program\, students will:\n1) Reflect and share how their own identities influence their experiences in college\n2) Identify and access Hunter’s network of resources\n3) Feel connected to a larger support community of fellow transfer students and peer mentors to increase their sense of belonging to Hunter College \nHCAP is now recruiting its next cohort of Transfer Peer Mentors (TPMs). We hope to accept 10 mentor applicants. TPMs will receive hands-on leadership coaching and skills training to become peer mentors who can assist incoming transfer students in navigating their Hunter experience and building community. SUMMARY:Apply by 9/9: HCAP Undergraduate Research Assistants (URA) Fall 2022
DESCRIPTION:This Fall 2022\, HCAP will be continuing the Undergraduate Research Assistants (URA) Program. This program is open to all Hunter undergraduate students interested in learning about research on mental health within the Asian American community.  Students will commit to being a research team member working with Dr. Marcia Liu\, HCAP Mental Health Specialist for the duration of the Fall semester. \nApply at: bit.ly/rifall22 \nThis semester\, the team will be focusing on two projects: \n(a) a continuation of a previous study focusing on East and Southeast Asian American college student experiences of COVID-19 racism\, racial identity\, and stress\, \n(b) a new study focusing on South Asian American students living with family throughout college\, including their experiences and stressors. \nStudents will commit to 2-3 hours of research work a week\, as well as a 1 hour weekly team meeting for a total commitment of 4 hours per week. Team meetings will take place on Zoom every Wednesday from 1p-2p.  Meetings will begin on Wednesday 9/21/22 and end on Wednesday 12/7/22. Accepted students must attend ALL Wednesdays meetings.  Meeting topics and research tasks may include the following: \n\n\nConducting literature reviews on past research focusing on Asian American communities\, mental health\, racial stressors\, familial conflict\, living at home throughout college\, and identity \n\n\nIdentifying and assessing various measures and scales for use with college students \n\n\nIdentifying gaps in previous research in order to develop research and interview questions \n\n\nDiscussing stressors and experiences specific to various Asian American racial\, ethnic\, religious\, and cultural communities \n\n\nIdentifying strategies for study recruitment and data collection \n\n\nPreparing research protocols for IRB submission \n\n\nLearning about various qualitative and quantitative methods of analysis \n\n\n  \nStudent Responsibilities: \nStudents will commit to being a research team member for the duration of the Fall semester. They are expected to attend all meetings from 9/21 to 12/7 and complete tasks independently between meetings. At the end of the semester\, students will produce a final product\, in consultation with Dr. Liu.  Examples may include: a reflection piece about their learning experience\, a literature review\, or a research protocol for submission to Hunter’s Institutional Review Board.  Students will also present at a future HCAP event. \nStipend: \nStudents who complete the program will receive a $500 stipend at the end of the semester. In order to receive the $500 stipend\, URAs must successfully complete the first month of the assistantship and be a current Hunter undergraduate student. \n  \nEligibility: \nAll Hunter undergraduate students with an interest in learning more about research exploration\, the Asian American community\, identity\, and mental health are encouraged to apply. DESCRIPTION:Mentee applications for the Spring 2023 semester are now open! \nApply at bit.ly/tppmenteeapp \n  \nTransfer Pipeline Program – Mentee Application \n  \n\nTransfer Pipeline Program Mentee Timeline:\nSpring 2023 semester (late January – May)\nProgram Benefits: \n\nKick-off event to build community with other transfer students and get introduced to trained peer mentors and HCAP staff\nAssigned peer mentor based on your academic and personal interests\nMonthly check-in meetings with a peer mentor\nWorkshops to introduce you to resources at Hunter\n3 monthly unlimited metrocards to be used during the semester\nConnection to a supportive peer community and 1:1 support from HCAP staff\n\nMentee Commitments: \n\nAttend virtual kick-off event on Monday\, January 23rd @ 6:00-7:30pm via Zoom\nAttend 2 small group meetings per month (February\, March\, April\, May)\nAttend at least 1 Transfer Pipeline resource workshop\nAttend at least 1 one-on-one meeting with HCAP staff\nBe in regular contact with your mentor and HCAP staff\n\nEligibility: \n\nMust be a transfer student starting your first semester at Hunter in Spring 2023 and available to attend all program requirements\nPreference will be given to students transferring from CUNY community colleges (including but not limited to: BMCC\, LaGuardia\, Hostos\, BCC)\n\nApply by January 9th\, 2023 at: bit.ly/tppmenteeapp\nLearn more on our Transfer Pipeline Program Page. \nWe will accept up to 20 mentees for our first cohort.
